2020
It is with heavy hearts that we write this post. Norma Harris, one of the two founders of our therapeutic riding program that has brought joy to so many, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 27.
In 1997, Norma teamed up with Judy Gerhard, a local teacher and horsewoman, to try and help Norma’s sister who had multiple sclerosis (MS). Their simple experiment was so effective that word got around and soon other people with MS and other disabilities wanted to benefit from this wonderful new therapy too. This was the birth of Horses for Healing Therapeutic Riding Program.
Later in her life, Norma made a full circle, returning to Horses for Healing in 2019 as a client. She loved to ride Genesis, English style, because he reminded her of her large dressage horses.
Marcy, our lead PATH International instructor, recalls how knowledgeable Norma was about horses and how much she learned from her. She was an expert horsewoman and everyone who knew her was touched by her passion. Norma will be deeply missed.
We know that Norma and Judy are working remotely in Heaven to watch over us and clear a path for our future. Each and every one of us at Horses for Healing is honored to be able to continue the legacy they have started.
